BAY OF COLWYN SAILING CLUB
AGM 20/1/08 COMMODORE’S REPORT
Welcome to you all this morning. Last year was a very good year for the club, with excellent progress being made. This was
achieved by having an excellent committee and I would personally like to thank my fellow Flag Officers and Committee
members for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
In April a new 2-metre high fence was erected by Achnasheen Fencing, the cost to us was just over £5000, with the Council
paying for the section between the Paddling Pool and us. This has made a tremendous difference and the Boat Park now
offers much improved security and I think it looks better than it ever has done. All abandoned boats and trailers have been
removed and now every boat in the Boat Park belongs to a member and all fees have been paid. I would like to thank our
Membership Secretary Phil Schofield for his excellent work in achieving this position. There is now a lot more pride taken in
the appearance of the Boat Park and members are getting the message that you take your rubbish home with you. The
Council (our Landlords) and local people judge us on the state of the Boat Park and it is imperative that we now keep up
these high standards.
Membership has gradually increased over the year and we have gained new members in both Sailing and Power. Incidentally
we now after many years once again have a Power Boat Captain Namely Nigel Potts, welcome Nigel. I would like to see
more Family membership, so instead of leaving the wife, kids, grandchildren at home, bring them along get them involved they
are the Clubs future.
Cruising last season was unfortunately effected by bad weather with a number of joint cruises with the North Wales Cruising
Club having to be called off. But plenty of sailing did go on with numerous trips to Conwy and Anglesey and four boats took
part in the 3-day August Bank Holiday cruise to Liverpool. We also had four boats competing in the Conwy River Festivals,
Telford Race.
Unfortunately this season there has been no club dinghy sailing and I don’t foresee any in the near future. This is a shame as
most people get into sailing via this route. This is a situation we will have to monitor and I would like to think that if there is a
demand for club dinghy sailing it could be set up again.
As for the coming season we are going to leave both the subs and boat Park fees unchanged. We are currently in
communication with Conwy County Borough Council with regards replacing our present Boat Park Agreement, which dates
back to 1960 with a new 21-Year Lease. When hopefully we are successful in acquiring a new lease we would like to replace
the Boat Shed and will be looking at the possibility of Matched Funding to finance the project.
Finally I would just like wish all members a Happy New Year and let’s hope we all have an enjoyable season.
